Kokura Christmas Market 2026: Castle, Lights, Dates and Hours
The Kokura Christmas market 2026 (KOKURA CHRISTMAS MARKET & CASTLE), 20 November to 25 December: hours, the City Hall plaza and the riverside, the Ogai Bridge light tunnel, the castle mug, a timed evening and which station to use.

The Kokura Christmas market is the one with a castle in the picture. KOKURA CHRISTMAS MARKET & CASTLE sets its wooden Hütte stalls along the Murasaki River below Kokura Castle, from 20 November to 25 December 2026, with a light-and-sound show on the water, an 18-metre tower of light in front of City Hall and a white light tunnel across the Ogai Bridge that stays lit into January. It’s the third edition, it’s free to enter, and it is a calmer evening than Fukuoka’s eleven venues, 16 minutes away by Shinkansen. I live in Kitakyushu and walk through this stretch of river most weeks; this is the page I’d send a friend who asked when to come and which station to get off at.
Dates, hours and rules below were checked on 2 November 2026 against the organiser’s site, kitakyushu-christmasmarket.jp, the city’s Kokura BEAT 2026 press release of 29 October, and kokura-illumination.jp. The Kitakyushu events hub and the events calendar have the rest of the winter.

Entry is free everywhere. The organiser’s site gives the market hours and its 36-day run (organiser); the city’s press release of 29 October 2026 gives the dates and venues of everything else (Kitakyushu City, Kokura BEAT 2026). One hours note: in 2025 the organiser announced a 15:00 opening for its Kokura Station venue from 22 to 25 December (organiser news, 22 December 2025). The 2026 outline doesn’t yet say whether that repeats, so check its news page before a Christmas-week afternoon.
The castle side and the river: what’s where
The whole thing is laid out along a short stretch of the Murasaki River, with the castle keep as the backdrop, and the city runs it under one banner, Kokura BEAT 2026, with this year’s theme “CONNECT”. Walking it from the castle side:
- City Hall north plaza. The city’s release puts the market itself on the plaza north of Kitakyushu City Hall, with a new 18-metre tower of light in front of the building and a stage with a programme of shows. The castle keep stands right behind it, which is the point: “a historic castle town and a Reiwa-era Christmas market, fused”, in the city’s words (Kokura BEAT 2026 release).
- Murasaki River Shinsui Hiroba. The waterside plaza below the plaza is the stage for the Murasaki River Night Spectacle, a show of light, sound and projected video on the water, billed by the city as a “waterside symphony”. Last year this plaza held the main Christmas tree with the keep rising behind it, and the prefecture’s listing describes the 2026 decor as bamboo light installations that mix Japanese and Western (Crossroad Fukuoka).
- Ogai Bridge. The footbridge that joins the castle bank to the shopping side carries the illumination’s white light tunnel. More on the bridge below.
- Senba Plaza. On the east bank at the far end of the bridge, the photo spot this year is built from the handmade lanterns of October’s Kokura Castle Take-akari bamboo-light festival, “warm light to lead you into town”.
One thing to know: the prefecture’s listing still names the two plazas of the first two editions, Murasaki River Shinsui Hiroba and Senba Plaza, with the address 1-1 Muromachi, while the city’s October release names the City Hall north plaza and “the Murasaki riverside”. The organiser’s venue map was “coming soon” when I checked. In practice the sites are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other; start at the Ogai Bridge and you’ll find the stalls.
The keep itself is a 1959 reconstruction of the 1602 castle, open from 9:00 to 18:00 (kokura-castle.jp), so a castle visit comes before the market, not after. Our Kokura Castle guide has tickets and what’s inside.
Kokura Illumination and the Ogai Bridge light tunnel
The lights are a separate, longer event, the Kokura Illumination, lit from 20 November 2026 to 11 January 2027, 17:00 to 22:00 and until 23:00 in some areas, with the switch-on ceremony on the evening of 20 November (kokura-illumination.jp). The city calls this year’s edition the largest yet: about 700,000 lights and objects in total, with roughly three times last year’s number of Christmas objects, including a giant Santa, a heart, balloon and arch panels and a face-in-the-hole board for photos (Kokura BEAT 2026 release).
The centrepiece is the Ogai Bridge. This year it’s all white: “a single straight silver road” of light from the middle of the bridge to both banks, in the organiser’s words, a tunnel you walk through with the castle keep framed at the far end. The bridge is named after Mori Ōgai, the Meiji novelist who served as army surgeon to the 12th Division in Kokura from 1899 to 1902, between the ages of 37 and 40, and it is shaped like a water bird with its wings spread; at its west end stands a literary monument with lines from his Kokura stories (Kokurakita Ward). So the walk from the stalls to the shopping streets passes through a tunnel of white light named for a writer who once walked the same bank.
The market closes on 25 December; the lights don’t. From 26 December to 11 January you get the bridge and the riverbanks with almost nobody on them, which is the photographer’s window.
The 2026 castle mug, food and paying
Every Christmas Advent venue has its own mug, and Kokura’s is the one with a castle on it. The organiser describes the 2026 design as “Kokura Castle, the symbol of Japan, fused with a Western Christmas”, a limited run sold together with a hot drink: hot wine, hot chocolate or a soft drink in the mug, which you keep (organiser). The price wasn’t published when this guide was checked.
Buy it early. In 2025 the organiser announced the mug sold out, put a resale on, and declared that gone too on 24 December (organiser news, December 2025). If the mug is the reason you’re coming, come in the first two weeks.
The stalls are the German-style Hütte of the Fukuoka markets, with hot food and drinks; last year’s edition had 28 stalls, up from 17 in the first year, plus 50 Santa figures and 10 trees (Kitakyushu City newsletter, November 2025). The 2026 shop list was still “coming soon” on the organiser’s site. The rules that matter:
- No carry-in. Outside food and drink can’t be brought into the venue (organiser; prefecture listing).
- Paying: credit cards are accepted, and so are d-barai, Rakuten Pay, au PAY, QUICPay, SUGOCA and nimoca. That list has no PayPay, so carry a card and some yen.
- Entry is free, for the market, the Night Spectacle and the illumination.
Make a night of it: castle, Tanga, Uomachi and Mt. Sarakura
This is a weekday plan, built around the 17:00 opening. On a weekend the stalls open at 12:00, but the lights don’t come on until 17:00, so the evening is still the evening.
- 15:00, Tanga Market. Tanga Market, Kokura’s covered food market, winds down around 18:00 and each shop sets its own closing day, so it comes first: rice-bran pickles from pots decades old, something from the fish stalls, a coffee (our Tanga guide).
- 16:00, Kokura Castle. Fifteen minutes’ walk west. The keep closes at 18:00, and the top-floor deck looks straight down on the river you’re about to walk.
- 17:00, the lights. Be on the Ogai Bridge at 17:00 when the tunnel switches on, then cross to the stalls. The first hour is the quietest the market gets, and the mug queue is shortest.
- 17:30 to 19:00, the market. A mug of hot wine, dinner from the Hütte, the Night Spectacle from the waterside plaza.
- 19:30, Uomachi. Back over the bridge to the Uomachi arcade for Kokura’s own dishes, yakiudon and iron-pan gyoza (where to eat in Kokura).
The other version ends on a mountain. Mt. Sarakura’s night view over the whole city is the best in Kitakyushu, but in winter (November to March) the cable car runs 10:00 to 20:00 with the last car up at 19:20, and it closes on Tuesdays except public holidays (Sarakurayama Cable Car; our Mt. Sarakura guide). Do the market at opening, leave Kokura Station by about 18:15 (JR to Yahata is 8 minutes, then 15 minutes on foot or a short taxi to the base), and you’ll be on the last car up, with the service ending at 20:00. If you’d rather not juggle the timings, Klook’s Karato Market and Mt. Sarakura night-view day tour from Fukuoka gets you up there with a guide, and the private Sarakura and Motonosumi Shrine tour can be timed to end at the river.
Getting there: Nishi-Kokura or Kokura Station
- Nishi-Kokura is closer. The venues are about 5 minutes on foot from JR Nishi-Kokura Station and about 10 minutes from JR Kokura Station (prefecture listing). Nishi-Kokura is one stop from Kokura on the Kagoshima Line. From Kokura Station the dry route is through Riverwalk Kitakyushu’s arcade, which has its own Christmas tree from 3 November; the Monorail’s Heiwadori stop is a 5-minute walk from the castle.
- From Fukuoka: the Shinkansen from Hakata takes about 16 minutes; the Kagoshima Line local is slower and cheaper. Our Fukuoka to Kitakyushu guide compares them.
- From Korea: the Busan ferries dock at Shin-Moji (Kitakyushu) and Hakata; see Busan to Kitakyushu and Fukuoka. Sort data before you land with the Japan eSIM guide.
- Parking: the river plazas have none of their own; the closest paid lot is under Riverwalk (Kokura Castle guide). Come by train.
Where to stay
Stay by Kokura Station: it puts the market a ten-minute walk away, the Shinkansen upstairs and Mojiko, Shimonoseki and Fukuoka within an hour. Our Kokura Station hotel guide ranks the options by walking time; to compare prices for your dates, search Kokura Station hotels on Booking.com or on Agoda. December weekends book up; weekdays in late November are easy.
Kokura or Fukuoka’s markets?
Both, if you have two evenings; Kokura if you have one and want it quiet. The honest comparison:
- Fukuoka has eleven venues, more than 170 stalls across them, the Hakata Station illumination and the biggest crowds; last year’s visitor count was about 3 million (our Fukuoka Christmas market guide).
- Kokura has one riverside, one castle, a show on the water and a light tunnel. It opens an hour later than Hakata on weekdays (17:00 against 16:00) and closes an hour earlier (22:00 against 23:00).
Kokura’s market is listed as a venue of Fukuoka’s Christmas Advent, which added it in 2024 (organiser release, October 2024), so the mug system, the Hütte and the hot wine are the same family. What’s different is the backdrop, and the fact that you can see all of it in an hour and still make the last cable car.
FAQ
When does the Kokura Christmas market end? 25 December 2026. The Kokura Illumination around the Ogai Bridge and the river continues to 11 January 2027.
Does it run in the rain? Yes, but the organiser says closing time may be brought forward in rain, and the market can be cancelled in severe weather. The Hütte have roofs and Riverwalk’s arcade is next door; the Night Spectacle is outdoors.
Can I bring my dog? Only in a carrier, cart or cage, per the organiser’s FAQ; dogs on a lead or carried in your arms are not allowed.
Is there a Kokura Station venue? In 2025 the organiser opened a “Kokura Station venue” at 15:00 over Christmas week, and Kokura Station gets its own tree from 13 November 2026. The 2026 market itself is on the river; check the organiser’s news page for any station stalls.
What else is on in Kokura that week? The Kitakyushu Pop Culture Festival on 28 and 29 November, the Uomachi Santa Post from 20 November to 13 December, and SANTA FESTA on 12 December (Kokura BEAT 2026 release). The things to do in Kokura guide covers the daylight hours.
One river, one castle, one white bridge. Be on the Ogai Bridge at 17:00, buy the mug before the second week of December, and let the lights carry you to Uomachi.
