Oita Prefecture Travel Guide
Oita Prefecture is Japan's onsen capital, and the two destinations most travelers reach from Fukuoka or Kitakyushu are Beppu and Yufuin. Beppu is the loud one, known for its jigoku meguri hells circuit, sand baths, and a townful of bathhouses fed by more hot-spring output than anywhere else in Japan. Yufuin, 25 minutes inland, is the quiet one, a boutique ryokan village built around Lake Kinrin and Yunotsubo Street. Both work as a day tour or an overnight from Hakata.
