Fukuoka to Yufuin: Train, Bus or Tour? Every Way from Hakata (2026)
Fukuoka to Yufuin in 2026: the Yufuin no Mori (2h14, ¥6,130, reserved only), the Yufu, the ¥4,300 Yufuin ticket via Oita, the Yufuin-go bus from Hakata, Tenjin and the airport, rail passes and day tours.
Getting from Fukuoka to Yufuin is a 2-hour trip with four honest answers, and the right one depends on whether you booked ahead. The famous one is the Yufuin no Mori, a green limited express that leaves Hakata Station three times a morning and afternoon and reaches Yufuin Station in about 2 hours 14 minutes for ¥6,130. It is reserved-seat only and it sells out. If it has, you still have the Limited Express Yufu on the same line, the Yufuin-go highway bus (about 2h20, ¥3,250, 14 round trips a day, also from the airport), a cheaper detour via Oita, or a day tour that handles all of it. Here is how each works, with the current times and fares as of October 2026.
Quick answer: train vs bus vs tour
| Option | Time | Adult fare, one way | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yufuin no Mori (limited express, Hakata to Yufuin direct) | about 2h14 | ¥6,130 regular; ¥5,600 online Kyushu Net Kippu | Reserved only. Opens 1 month ahead at 10:00 JST |
| Limited Express Yufu (same line, same stops) | about 2.5 h | Slightly below the Yufuin no Mori (car 3 is non-reserved) | Walk-up possible on the non-reserved car |
| Sonic to Oita, then local train (ゆふいんきっぷ) | about 3 to 3.5 h | ¥4,300 with the online-only Yufuin Kippu | JR Kyushu online reservation, QR ticket |
| Yufuin-go highway bus (Tenjin, Hakata BT, airport) | about 2h20 from Tenjin | ¥3,250 standard; ¥2,880 web early-bird (7 days ahead) | Reservation required, seats assigned |
| JR Kyushu Rail Pass, Northern Kyushu 3-day | as above | ¥15,000 for 3 days, Yufuin no Mori included | For temporary visitors on a foreign passport |
| Day tour from Hakata | 10 to 11 h door to door | Check Klook for current prices | Book online, pickup at Hakata |
My rule of thumb: the Yufuin no Mori if you can get seats, the bus if you can’t or you’re flying in, the Oita detour only if you’re also going to Beppu, and the tour if you’d rather not plan anything.
Yufuin no Mori: times, seats, how to book
The Yufuin no Mori is JR Kyushu’s oldest tourist train. Its first generation entered service in 1989 as Kyushu’s first “D&S” (Design and Story) train, according to JR Kyushu’s own page, and it set the template for every themed train the company has launched since: a high floor so every seat looks over the hedges, wood panelling, big windows, and a buffet counter in car 2 or 3 selling sweets, local beer and souvenirs. Two train sets run today, a 4-car set from 1989 and a 5-car set added in 1999, and you don’t get to choose which one you ride.
Current timetable from Hakata (check JR Kyushu before you travel; the Yufu sometimes runs in its slot during maintenance):
- Yufuin no Mori 1: Hakata 9:17, Yufuin 11:31
- Yufuin no Mori 3: Hakata 10:11, Yufuin 12:32, continuing to Beppu
- Yufuin no Mori 5: Hakata 14:38, Yufuin 16:50
It stops at Tosu, Kurume, Hita, Amagase and Bungo-Mori on the way, following the Kyudai Line up the Chikugo and Mikuma river valleys. The stretch after Hita, where the line squeezes through the gorge at Amagase, is why people pay the premium for a window seat.
Fares: ¥6,130 one way for an adult at the regular fare (that figure already includes the reserved-seat charge; there is no cheaper unreserved option on this train). JR Kyushu’s internet-only Kyushu Net Kippu lowers it to ¥5,600 for the same seat, so there is no reason to buy at the window if you have a card and five minutes.
How to book: every seat on the Yufuin no Mori is reserved. Sales open one month before the travel date at 10:00 Japan time on the JR Kyushu Train Reservation site (free membership required). JR Kyushu’s English page says demand is “consistently fully booked”, and in my experience that is not marketing: Saturday mornings in autumn and the cherry-blossom weeks go within hours of release. Book the outbound and the return at the same time. If you would rather have someone else handle the ticket pickup, Klook lists the Hakata to Yufuin ticket with hotel or station delivery:
Check Yufuin no Mori ticket options on Klook →If you get the 10:11 train, note that it continues to Beppu Station: a Yufuin morning and a Beppu afternoon on one ticket is a very good day, and our Beppu day-trip guide covers what to do once you arrive.
Limited Express Yufu and the route via Oita
The Yufu: same line, less fuss
The Limited Express Yufu runs the identical Hakata to Yufuin to Beppu route with ordinary KiHa 185 diesel cars, three round trips a day. Nobody photographs it, which is exactly its advantage: car 3 is non-reserved, so on a day when the Yufuin no Mori shows “sold out”, you can walk up to the green ticket machine at Hakata, buy a non-reserved limited express ticket and get on. It takes roughly 2.5 hours instead of 2h14, and the fare is a little lower because you skip the reserved-seat charge. When JR Kyushu pulls a Yufuin no Mori set for maintenance, a Yufu runs in its slot, so the two are interchangeable in every way except the view from the seat.
Via Oita: the Sonic plus a local
The other rail route doesn’t use the Kyudai Line at all. You ride the Sonic limited express east along the coast to Oita Station, about 2 hours, then change to a local Kyudai Line train that climbs back west to Yufuin in about an hour. Total around 3 to 3.5 hours with the connection. On its own this makes no sense, but JR Kyushu now sells a ticket that makes it the cheapest rail option (next section), and if your plan is Beppu first and Yufuin second, you are going this way anyway.
Yufuin-go bus from Hakata, Tenjin and the airport
The Yufuin-go (ゆふいん号) highway bus is run jointly by Nishitetsu, Kamenoi Bus and Hita Bus, and it is the most frequent link between the two places. According to Kamenoi Bus’s highway page: 14 round trips a day, about 2 hours 20 minutes from Tenjin to Yufuin, ¥3,250 one way for an adult at the standard fare, and ¥2,880 if you book on the web at least 7 days ahead. Seats are assigned and a reservation is required; book on the Kyushu highway bus site highwaybus.com or by phone (0977-25-3220, Japanese).
Pickup points in Fukuoka, in order:
- Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, on the 3rd floor of the Solaria Terminal Building above Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station.
- Hakata Bus Terminal, next to Hakata Station. Highway buses leave from the 3rd floor; arrivals come in on the 2nd.
- Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, bus stop 10, per the airport’s bus page. This is the one that matters for anyone flying in: you walk out of arrivals and onto the Yufuin bus without going into the city. If you land at the domestic terminal, the free inter-terminal shuttle takes about 10 minutes.
From the airport the bus runs non-stop up the Oita Expressway, stopping only at the Kokonoe and Kusu interchanges and a couple of expressway bus stops before dropping you at the Yufuin Ekimae Bus Center, a two-minute walk from the station. Buses have toilets and the usual four-across seating. The trade-off against the train: no buffet, no gorge, and expressway traffic on holiday weekends can add 30 minutes.
Bus or train? For a couple without a rail pass, two bus tickets at ¥2,880 come to ¥5,760, less than one seat on the Yufuin no Mori. For anyone arriving by air, the bus wins outright: airport to Yufuin in one seat versus subway, Hakata and a reserved train you probably haven’t booked.
Discount tickets and rail passes
ゆふいんきっぷ (Yufuin Kippu), ¥4,300 one way. JR Kyushu refreshed this ticket in 2026 under the full name “こっちでも行けるよ!ゆふいんきっぷ” (roughly “you can get there this way too”), and the name is the point: it covers Hakata (Fukuoka city) to Oita on a limited express, then Oita to Yufuin on a local train, the detour route above, for ¥4,300 adult / ¥2,150 child in ordinary class, or ¥7,000 in a Green car. It is online only, through the same JR Kyushu reservation service, with a QR ticket so you never queue at a machine, and reserved seats can be chosen at purchase. Valid for travel 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, on sale until 31 March 2027. Figures from Travel Watch’s report on the release; confirm on jrkyushu.co.jp before you buy, since this ticket has changed price and conditions once already this year. It does not put you on the Yufuin no Mori.
Kyushu Net Kippu, ¥5,600. The online fare for the direct Yufuin no Mori, mentioned above. Not a pass, just a cheaper version of the same reserved ticket.
JR Kyushu Rail Pass. For temporary visitors on a foreign passport only. Current adult prices from JR Kyushu’s pass page: Northern Kyushu ¥15,000 for 3 days, ¥17,000 for 5 days; All Kyushu ¥22,000 / ¥24,000 / ¥26,000 for 3, 5 and 7 days. Both cover the Yufuin no Mori with the seat reservation included (Northern Kyushu allows up to 6 free reservations; All Kyushu unlimited). A Hakata to Yufuin round trip at regular fare is ¥12,260, so a 3-day Northern Kyushu pass pays for itself the moment you add one more limited express ride, say Hakata to Kokura and back, or Yufuin on to Beppu. Pass holders still have to reserve the Yufuin no Mori, and the seats come out of the same pool as everyone else’s, so the one-month rule applies to you too.

Skip the logistics: tours with the train or bus built in
If the words “sales open one month ahead at 10:00 JST” made you tired, a day tour is the sane alternative. Fukuoka-departure Yufuin tours pick up around Hakata Station in the morning, drive you to Yufuin in a coach, give you four to five hours to walk from the station to Lake Kinrin and back, and return you by early evening. Some add Beppu’s hells in the afternoon. What you lose is the gorge view and the freedom to linger; what you gain is a guaranteed seat and no booking anxiety. I compared the tour against doing it yourself in detail in the Yufuin day tour from Fukuoka guide.

Getting back to Fukuoka
This is where day-trippers get caught. The last Yufuin no Mori to Hakata leaves Yufuin at 17:17 (the others are 12:01 and 15:56), arriving Hakata around 19:30. There is no later scenic train. Miss it and your options are a later Yufu (check the day’s timetable at the station), the Yufuin-go bus, which keeps running into the evening with 14 round trips, or the long way round via Oita on the Sonic.
Three habits that save the trip:
- Book the return when you book the outbound. Return seats on the 15:56 and 17:17 sell out before the morning trains do, because every day-tripper wants them.
- Treat 16:30 as your deadline at Lake Kinrin. It is a 20-minute walk back to the station along Yunotsubo Street, and the street is slow at that hour.
- If you’re staying the night, take the 17:17 the next day instead and you get the lake to yourself in the morning fog, which is the whole reason the photos look the way they do. Yufuin ryokan book up on weekends; compare rates on Booking.com or Agoda early.
Arriving in Yufuin: station, bus centre, luggage
Yufuin Station is worth two minutes of your attention before you rush to the shops. The black, chapel-like building with its 12-metre atrium was designed by Arata Isozaki, the Oita-born architect who went on to win the Pritzker Prize in 2019, and completed in 1990 (Yufuin Station on Japanese Wikipedia; Isozaki on Wikipedia). It has no ticket gates: you walk straight from the platform into the hall, and the waiting room floor is heated by hot-spring water. At the Hita end of platform 1 there is a footbath (¥160, buy the ticket at the counter), a civilised way to wait for the 17:17.
Next door is YUFUiNFO, the Yufu City Tourist Information Center, opened in 2018 in a glass-and-timber building by Shigeru Ban, another Pritzker laureate (ANA’s Yufuin page has the story). Two Pritzker buildings at one small-town station is a genuine piece of Yufuin trivia, and the ground floor is also where you solve the luggage problem: the ゆふいんチッキ (Yufuin Chikki) counter delivers bags to your ryokan (¥300 to ¥1,200 by size, drop-off 9:00 to 15:00) or stores them for the day (¥500 to ¥800), and there are coin lockers at ¥500 and ¥600, open 9:00 to 17:00 (details on MATCHA). Use it. Yunotsubo Street with a suitcase is nobody’s idea of an onsen town.
The Yufuin Ekimae Bus Center sits in front of the station: highway buses back to Fukuoka, and the local Kamenoi buses to Beppu, all leave from here. Lake Kinrin is a flat 20-minute walk straight ahead down Yunotsubo Street.
Mobile coverage is fine in town but the Kyudai Line has dead patches in the gorge, so download your maps and have data sorted before you leave Fukuoka; our Japan eSIM guide covers the options.
